Over the days Lizzo expressed that she has been, through incredibly challenging and profoundly disappointing times. She shared that the allegations made against her are so unbelievable and outrageous that she felt compelled to address them even though she typically avoids responding to claims.
The BBC was informed by the dancers that they view Lizzo not as a villain but more as an anti hero.
Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez are dancers who have filed a lawsuit against Lizzo, her dance captain and her production company Big Grrrl Big Touring (BGBT). The legal action includes allegations of racial harassment along with discrimination, assault and false imprisonment.
The lawsuit also claims that the dancers were pressured into attending sexualized shows and engaging with performers at these events, between 2021 and 2023.These exaggerated accounts are originating from ex staff members who have openly acknowledged that they were informed about their unprofessional conduct, during the tours.
"As an artist I have always held a passion, for my craft. I approach my music and performances with dedication as my ultimate goal is to deliver art that truly reflects both myself and my devoted fans."
Passion is what drives me to work and maintain standards. At times I find myself having to make decisions. It is never my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable or undervalued as an important member of the team.
I want to clarify that I don't see myself as a victim nor do I believe that the portrayal of me, in the media over the days accurately represents who I am. While I am open, about my sexuality and expressing myself it's important for me to address that others should not misinterpret or twist that openness into something its not.
As a woman there are things I take seriously than the respect we all deserve in this world. Having experienced body shaming on a basis I would never. Terminate an employee based on their weight.
Although this situation has hurt me I refuse to let it overshadow all the work I've done in making an impact. To everyone who has shown their support during this time thank you for lifting me up.
In response, to Lizzos statement about being "portrayed" as "the villain " Ms. Davis expressed her perspective to the BBC stating that she sees Lizzo more as an anti hero, than a villain. According to her a true villain lacks any redeeming qualities. Is simply bad, evil and terrible.
". An anti hero is someone who does things but still possesses redeeming qualities. Do I believe Lizzo can embrace this and transform into the person she claims to be? Absolutely, yes.
"When I first met her I hoped she would remain true, to herself. We don't desire a campaign that tears her down; instead we seek justice the opportunity for people to be heard and ultimately meaningful change. I genuinely believe she has the ability to undergo that transformation."
Ms. Rodriguez further expressed, "I don't necessarily view her as a villain but she should be held responsible for all her actions or contributions in creating this environment. It's time we held individuals accountable for instances as they occur too frequently."
In response Ms. Williams emphasized the importance of having conversations, than focusing on assigning blame; "Lets not dwell on who's the villain; lets acknowledge what has transpired. We have experienced an ordeal that unfortunately happens too often in the entertainment industry particularly concerning dancers.""I believe it's crucial to implement changes in order to establish accountability and prevent incidents, from occurring in the future."
The dancers also discussed their reasons, for sharing their grievances with Ms. Williams describing it as an option and a situation they hoped would never arise.
