The Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has instructed doctors in three hospitals, on Lagos Island to commence a strike due to the untimely death of their colleague, Dr. Vwaere Diaso.
Dr. Diaso tragically lost her life in an accident involving a malfunctioning elevator at the General Hospital, Odan popularly known as the Lagos Island General Hospital.
It is reported that Dr. Diasos life was cut short two weeks before completing her housemanship at the hospital.
Expressing sorrow and shock the NMA released a statement through its state Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu and Secretary Ismail Ajibowo. They conveyed their condolences to Dr. Diasos family colleagues on the island members of the Medical Guild and all doctors in Lagos State. According to information it is believed that she was trapped in the elevator for, over 40 minutes before being rescued.
According to the National Medical Association (NMA) they have received information that there is currently a shortage of blood, for resuscitation. This has been a problem since the government reviewed the policy, on blood donation.
"We believe that this death could have been prevented and it is truly unfortunate that it was allowed to occur. Our hearts are heavy, with grief and sorrow. It is disheartening to acknowledge that this particular elevator has been a recurring issue for years despite complaints made to the relevant authorities without any resolution " the statement expressed.
In response the association has declared a mourning period of five days. Called for an immediate and unbiased investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. They insist on holding accountable all those Ms. Adenike Adekambi, the General Manager of the Lagos State Infrastructure Management Agency.
Furthermore "We instruct all our doctors in the three government hospitals on the Island (GH Lagos, LIMH and MSCH) to initiate a strike until the investigations are concluded and justice is served. Additionally we request our doctors in all government hospitals to reduce their activities as a sign of respect, for our colleague. Only emergency services will be provided over the five days " stated their declaration.
The association emphasized the need for the government to initiate a renovation of the house officers residences, on the island. Additionally they called for attention to be given to any infrastructure, in government hospitals that requires repair.
It was mentioned that there is a need to improve the blood transfusion system, in Lagos State for services. Additionally due to this incident the Nigerian Medical Associations Lagos State Officers Committee has decided to keep the Annual General Meeting low key as a sign of respect for the deceased.
The committee assures our colleagues to stay calm as the leadership of NMA Lagos State is fully committed, to addressing this situation. Will do everything to ensure that justice is not only served but also seen to be served.
