The Labour Party has expressed disappointment, with President Ahmed Tinubus list of nominees submitted to the Senate for confirmation. According to Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the Party the names, on the list reinforce concerns that the administration led by Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) is ill equipped for governance.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday Ifoh also mentioned that his party intends to seek advice regarding the legality of submitting the list in fragments. He strongly believes that Nigerians expectations have been completely shattered by the list presented to the Senate Thursday.
Ifoh stated, "Nigerians anticipated seeing individuals on that list who possess quality, character, dynamism and a track record of achieving results. However what we witnessed was a rehashing of failed and clueless politicians who played roles in administrations since 2015 when APC failed to fulfill its promises to Nigerians.""We also witnessed a display of favoritism, in the sphere, where individuals closely associated with the national leader of the APC were chosen as a reward, for their loyalty and unquestioning obedience.
"However it is important to note that this list does not adequately represent the pool of talents, potentials and resources that Nigeria possesses."
"It's truly perplexing why this government overlooked the potential of adept individuals and instead opted to appoint experienced individuals who have previously failed Nigeria."
Ifoh further expressed, "Upon examining the list it becomes evident that there is a lack of technocrats who typically form the core group for implementing policies in any given government. Unfortunately they have been replaced by politicians who're more interested, in gaining favor and may not contribute much towards addressing the countrys challenges including socio economic issues, economy struggles, security concerns, healthcare, education and poverty reduction."
"Choosing traditional politicians to lead the government at such a juncture will not yield the desired outcomes."
"The political class has let down Nigerians in the past. As they say we need individuals in positions that suit their skills and expertise. Sadly that seems to be far from what we're being served."
"We had hoped for a representation of people, within the government."In our era it is crucial to have individuals who possess a proven record of accomplishments. We require dynamic individuals who can travel across the nation come up with ideas and dedicate their nights to deep thinking without rest. These individuals will play a role, in finding solutions for the challenges that our country faces.
The reason why we are considering seeking advice is because we have concerns, about the way the ministerial list is being presented. According to the constitution it is mandatory to appoint least one minister from each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Moreover the amended Electoral Act specifies that a list of nominees must be submitted to the Senate within 60 days of a governments commencement for screening and confirmation. However what we observed was a prepared list that excluded nominations from around 10 states clearly violating our countrys laws.
Having 60 days to form a team is quite a period for any serious government. It becomes more baffling when considering that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been striving to become president for over two decades; one would expect him to have identified and selected a team across the country for ministerial positions by now. Unfortunately this hasn't been the case.
If it weren't, for the Electoral Act requiring a government to submit a list within 60 days given what we're witnessing it makes one wonder how long it would have taken for APC leadership to form the government.
