The European Union has decided to halt aid and security cooperation with Niger in response, to the military coup. Meanwhile the African Union is urging the leaders of the coup to return to their barracks.
General Abdourahamane Tchiani, commander of Nigers guard declared himself as the head of a government after detaining President Mohamed Bazoum on Wednesday.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stated that budget support will be immediately stopped and all security related collaborations will be indefinitely suspended. The EU had allocated 503 million euros ($554m) from its budget for initiatives aimed at enhancing governance, education and sustainable growth in Niger between 2021 and 2024.
Borrell emphasized that President Bazoum is recognized as the leader of Niger and called for his immediate release. Additionally he urged accountability for the safety of both President Bazoum and his family from those, for the coup.
The EU expressed its willingness to support decisions made by West Africas bloc, which may include implementing sanctions if deemed necessary.
Previously the ranking diplomat of the United States also expressed unwavering support, for the leader of Niger cautioning those who have taken him captive that significant financial aid could be, in jeopardy unless democratic principles are reinstated.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had a phone conversation, with Bazoum expressing that the United States is committed to helping Niger restore its order following the coup as stated by the state department on Friday.
Blinken also commended Bazoum for his efforts in enhancing security not in Niger but throughout West Africa.
Earlier in the week Blinken informed Bazoum that US support for Niger would be contingent upon its adherence to governance, respect for the rule of law and human rights.
In a televised address on Friday General Tchiani, aged 62 asserted that he had assumed control of the government to prevent what he perceived as the countrys inevitable decline.
"Return to barracks"
The African Union has demanded that the military in Niger promptly return to their barracks and reinstate authority within 15 days since seizing power.
The AUs Peace and Security Council issued a communiqué after a meeting on Friday regarding the Niger coup stressing "the unconditional return of personnel to their barracks" and restoration of constitutional authority, within a maximum period of fifteen (15) days.The organization strongly denounces the overthrow of the elected government. Is deeply worried, about the concerning rise of military coups in Africa.
Tchiani in the past played a role in opposing a failed coup attempt in March 2021. During that time there was an endeavor by troops to seize control of the palace days before Bazoums inauguration, as the newly elected leader.
The recent election of Bazoum, who's pro Western marked a milestone for Niger. It symbolizes the transfer of power since the country gained independence from France in 1960.
Niger holds importance, for both the United States and France as it shares borders with seven countries including Libya, Chad and Nigeria. Both countries view Niger as a partner in addressing security threats in the region.
In terms of assistance Niger has been the recipient of US support in West Africa. Since 2012 it has received an estimated $500 million in aid from the US.
Furthermore Niger plays host to over 2,000 troops from the United States and France. This presence underscores their commitment to maintaining stability and security, in the region.
