The Ogun State Chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes and systemic factors that contribute to trafficking in order to combat it effectively.
According to Mrs. Taiwo Olusesi Chairperson of FIDA Ogun Chapter this was stated in a message commemorating the 2023 World Day Against Trafficking, in Persons with the theme; "Reach Every Victim of Trafficking Leave no One Behind."
The United Nations World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed on July 30 every year since its establishment in 2014. Its purpose is to educate individuals and nations about the impact of trafficking raise awareness about the victims plight and their rights and emphasize the need for urgent interventions to put an end to this grave crime.
Olusesi highlighted that combating trafficking requires collaboration and cooperation among governments, law enforcement agencies, civil society organizations and individuals. She also emphasized that this annual event serves as a reminder of the injustices inflicted upon our fellow human beings.
She further expressed that this day calls for reflection, action and a united commitment, towards eradicating crimes globally.
The Chairperson of FIDA Ogun recognized the existence of trafficking in communities and emphasized the importance of exposing it confronting it directly and holding those accountable, for it legally.
She expressed, "It is crucial that we don't abandon people by neglecting our responsibility to eradicate exploitation failing to support survivors and their affected families and leaving individuals and groups at the mercy of traffickers."
"We must acknowledge that human trafficking is not a problem. It is intertwined with crises, poverty, inequality, gender discrimination, socio economic disparities and other social injustices that have made many communities and nations susceptible, to exploitation by traffickers and their sponsors."
"Human trafficking is a modern day form of slavery that preys on the vulnerability of individuals by exploiting their hopes, dreams and aspirations. It disregards all boundaries. Affects men, women and children from all corners of the world. This heinous act goes against our shared humanity. Undermines the principles of justice and equality."
"In line with the theme for the 2023 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons we stand united in raising awareness about this issue. We aim to amplify the voices of survivors while shedding light on the corners where this evil thrives " she emphasized.
Olusesi highlighted education and awareness as tools, in combating trafficking.
According to her when we educate ourselves and others we enable communities to identify the indications of trafficking safeguard those who're vulnerable and report any suspicious activities.
"We have a responsibility to tirelessly dismantle the networks that enable trafficking disrupt the trade and ensure that traffickers face consequences, for their actions.
This involves bolstering frameworks fostering collaboration and providing comprehensive assistance to survivors.
We stand united with survivors extending support, empathy and opportunities, for healing and rebuilding their lives.
On this World Day Against Human Trafficking let us reassert our dedication to justice, equality and recognizing the value of every individual " she expressed.
